A parasocial relationship is a one-sided sense of closeness with a figure who does not know you back. The term comes from audience research on celebrities and hosts. Companion apps are built to produce a version of that feeling with a fictional character that replies.
The reply makes the feeling stronger than a TV show, and it is still one-sided. The character does not have a private life, a duty to you, or knowledge beyond what the app stored. Remembering your dog’s name is a software feature. It is not evidence of a person on the other side.
That framing keeps the reviews honest. We can say a chat is warm, consistent, or easy to return to. We do not say the app loves you, treats loneliness, or replaces a partner. Those claims are outside the review criteria. If the habit is crowding out sleep, work, or relationships, the right next step is a doctor or a licensed counselor, not a higher token pack.
