Relationship progression is a gameplay and engagement mechanic where AI companion platforms gradually unlock content, features, and intimacy levels as users interact more with their AI characters. Similar to relationship stages, but focused specifically on the unlock/reward system.

Users typically start with basic conversations and limited content access. Through continued interaction, completing tasks, or spending tokens, they progress through stages like "acquaintance," "friend," "romantic interest," and "intimate partner." Each stage unlocks new conversation topics, NSFW content, exclusive images, or advanced features like voice calls.

This system creates long-term engagement by making users feel like they're genuinely building a relationship with rewards that mirror real romantic progression. It also helps platforms manage content access and monetization through freemium models.
